Lacrosse sticks and booth full of new youth shoes – a traditionally unlikely pairing to find on the field. However over Halloween weekend at Rocky Top Sports World, both items could be found in a plethora around campus. At the 3rd annual Battle in the Burg girls’ lacrosse tournament, held on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, Rocky Top Sports World asked the teams in attendance to bring new youth shoes as donations for a local charity in Sevier County. At the end of the 2-day tournament, Rocky Top Sports World collected over 100 pairs of new youth shoes for their donation.
This is the second year Rocky Top Sports World has joined with Lace Up With Lax, a nonprofit that aims to end the cycle of homelessness one step at a time. In the height of the season of giving, teams participated in a friendly competition to determine who could donate the most shoes. This added donation competition provided a healthy boost in the number of shoes collected. Donation numbers tripled in comparison to 2019. The Clarksville Queens brought 32 pairs of shoes and won Lace Up With Lax t-shirts, socks, and a team banner to take home.
Melissa Rose, founder and president of Lace Up With Lax stated, “Rocky Top Sports World did not let COVID-19 stop their dedication. We appreciate and are humbled by their annual support of our mission and hope to continue our partnership for years to come.”
All shoes collected during the tournament were donated to Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministries (SMARM).
The director of SMARM, Ryan Huskey, said, “SMARM is extremely grateful for the large quantity of shoes that we received from Rocky Top Sports World from their Battle in the Burg lacrosse tournament. It is a true testament of Smoky Mountain visitors giving back to those in our community that are in need!”
The 4th annual Battle in the Burg tournament is set to take place on Oct. 30-31, 2021 at Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg, Tenn. For more information about Rocky Top Sports World, visit their website or follow them on Facebook.
