Story of the Week: Rocky Mount Event Center Aids in COVID-19 Relief

Summer is here and that typically means busy schedules as everyone plans vacations, summer camps, birthday parties and more. But summer in 2020 looks completely different. This is also the case for our SFM Network venues, who are re-opening, but to a new normal. During this unprecedented time when COVID-19 has brought youth and amateur sports to a screeching halt, the SFM Network facilities are working hard to continue to serve our communities.

Over the last several months, we have seen our venues step up and offer a lending hand to their community. We highlighted Cedar Point Sports Center’s partnership with their local Red Cross to host a blood drive. In another story, Hoover Metropolitan Complex in Hoover, Alabama was a tremendous aid to their local community by providing necessary food services to those in need.

This week, we are applauding Rocky Mount Event Center in Rocky Mount, North Carolina for their continuous support of their city in giving back to their community in need. Last month the City of Rocky Mount held a food distribution at the Event Center in partnership with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina and local Sanderson Farms Chicken. The distribution was for those who have been affected financially due to COVID-19.

Over 60 representatives from the city's department volunteered to distribute items like milk, chicken, produce, various fruits, family meal boxes and various non-perishable items. The collaboration of all the parties for the event was able to feed 500 families in the Rocky Mount community.

About this event, Rocky Mount Event Center General Manager David Joyner commented, “I am delighted and proud of our Rocky Mount Event Center to have been the host site for the City of Rocky Mount’s COVID-19 Food Distribution Campaign. Our fantastic kitchen team worked hard to help prepare the hundreds of pounds of donated chicken, and all of our team members pitched in to support this wonderful event. With numerous local families here struggling during this global pandemic, it was a beautiful sight to see so many people come to our grounds to receive food to help feed their families.”

In recent weeks, in partnership with their onsite health center, OIC Health, Rocky Mount Event Center has become a free, walk-up COVID-19 testing site. Those who wish to be tested for the virus are able to walk-in to the OIC center located on the Event Center property and be serviced by a medical professional. The Event Center has taken all precautionary measures to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the venue.
